DefEYE Announces Publication of Multiple Peer-Reviewed Articles Highlighting Use of Biovance 3L Ocular

Sarasota, FL – February 23, 2026 – DefEYE, Inc, a privately held ophthalmics company focused on innovative placental-based biologic solutions for ocular surface disease and surgical applications, today announced the publication of two peer-reviewed articles highlighting the use of Biovance 3L Ocular, the only tri-layer decellularized basement membrane (DBM) in ocular surgery and in ocular surface disease applications.

Decellularization removes donor cellular material and soluble components while preserving the native extracellular matrix architecture. The resulting structural scaffold provides ocular surface coverage and supports cell adhesion and migration, serving as a framework that facilitates recipient host-mediated cellular repair and normal epithelial healing.

Biovance applications include, but are not limited to, corneal and conjunctiva! related injuries or defects such as persistent corneal epithelial defects, severe dry eye, neurotrophic keratitis, corneal dystrophy, infectious or inflammatory keratitis, pterygium repair, fornix reconstruction, and other procedures [1-4].

The first article, entitled “A Retrospective Review of Glueless, Sutureless Pterygium Excision Using Biovance Triple-Layer Decellularized Amniotic Basement Membrane Tissue,” published in Ophthalmology and Therapy and authored by Marguerite McDonald, MD1, demonstrated outcomes of pterygium surgery, including the use of Biovance 3L Ocular. Key highlights from the study are:

  • Pterygium excision is a common but challenging procedure with historically high recurrence rates
  • Decellularized basement membrane tissue (Biovance 3L Ocular) allows for strong adhesion without need for glue or sutures
  • This study reinforces the simplified, sutureless and glueless technique maintains excellent safety and efficacy
  • There were no reported recurrences, pyogenic granuloma, dellen or infection
  • By preserving conjunctiva, reducing surgical time, and delivering effective outcomes, this glueless, sutureless technique can reduce costs of pterygium surgery and enhance outcomes for routine and high-risk cases
  • Biovance 3L Ocular application at the time of pterygium surgery offers several advantages:
    • Comparable recurrence rates to autograft
    • Reduced scarring and improved comfort due to placement over the excision defect
    • Reduced need and duration for postop steroids
    • Reduced costs and OR time
    • Preservation of conjunctiva that would otherwise be sacrificed in autografting
    • Faster, healing with improved cosmetic outcomes

The second article, entitled “Comparison of Effectiveness of Biovance Single and Triple Layer Decellularized Basement Membranes for Treatment of Ocular Surface Disease: A Retrospective Study,” published in Clinical Optometry and authored by Melanie Denton, OD, compared Biovance (Single Layer DBM) and Biovance 3L Ocular (Triple Layer DBM) for the treatment of ocular surface disease. Key highlights from the study are:

  • Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder characterized by tear film instability, ocular surface inflammation, and epithelial compromise
  • Amniotic membrane, including DBM, has emerged as a valuable modality for DED management due to its ability to protect against mechanical trauma, modulate inflammation and fibrosis, promote corneal epithelial migration, and help restore ocular surface homeostasis in refractory cases
  • Corneal healing was assessed over a 6-month period for patients receiving either Biovance or Biovance 3L Ocular, in conjunction with pressure patching.
  • Both groups demonstrated statistically significant reductions in corneal fluorescein staining at 3 and 6 months; however, at 6 months, the reduction in corneal staining in the Biovance 3L Ocular group was statistically significantly greater than that observed in the Biovance group.
  • Overall, at both 3 and 6 months, Biovance 3L Ocular exhibited a greater magnitude and duration of corneal staining improvement compared to Biovance, thereby supporting the long-term efficacy of multi-layered DBM in the treatment of DED-related epithelial disease
